Roku remote not working? 7 fixes that actually help

A remote that won't respond is one of the most common — and most frustrating — Roku problems. The good news: it's almost always an easy fix. Here are the seven we recommend most, in the order to try them.
1. Use your phone as the remote
The instant fix: open the Roku TV Remote app and control your TV directly over Wi-Fi. No batteries, no line of sight required.
2. Restart your Roku
Unplug the device for 10 seconds and plug it back in. A fresh boot clears the majority of glitches.
3. Replace or reseat the batteries
For physical remotes, weak batteries cause intermittent behavior. Swap in a fresh set before anything else.
4. Re-pair the remote
Hold the pairing button inside the battery compartment for five seconds until the light flashes to reconnect it.
5. Check your Wi-Fi
If you're using the app, make sure your phone and Roku are on the same network. Switching off cellular data helps.
6. Clear obstructions
For infrared remotes, anything between the remote and the TV blocks the signal. Keep the path clear.
7. Update your software
Outdated firmware can cause connection drops. Check for updates in your Roku settings and install anything pending.
